Transmitter glitch knocks KRNM off air
KRNM, the CNMI’s only public radio station, was knocked off the air last week due to problems with the transmitter.
The station has not been broadcasting since Friday.
The Northern Marianas College, where the station is located, is waiting for an FCC-certified telecommunications engineer to arrive from Guam to assess the situation, according to NMC. Once the repairs are finished, the station will be back on air broadcasting 24-hours a day.
The station has been running without a station manager after Carl Pogue left the island last month. The station has been relying on recorded material since Pogue, who worked at the station for nine years, left.
NPR and BBC have been playing through an online stream, while Radio Australia is expected to play through the end of this month or the beginning of next month.
Earlier this year, NMC said they would no longer be able to fund the radio station. In the past, NMC provided space for the station, paid the cost of utilities and staff, and provided other related services. The station needs approximately $150,000 per year to continue to operate.
The Board of Regents is expected to discuss the station’s future at the next meeting.
