Some 40 members of Koala Wanderers International from Germany have signified their intention to come to the CNMI next year to join the IVV Walk on Saipan.

The group’s manager Manfred Trettin and wife Eva along with three other friends visited the island in May 2005 for the World Walking Day organized by the Saipan Walking Association, Inc.

The group will be here from May 19 to 23 and will take part in the five- and 10-kilometer walk set on May 20. Aside from the usual tourist activities on Saipan, Trettin and his colleagues also want to go to Tinian by boat and possibly take part in a walking event there as well.

SAIWAI secretary Mario Espeleta said that before coming on Saipan, the Koala Wanderers would be in Korea and Japan, where they will participate in the IVV Olympiad.

Espeleta said that it would be the first IVV Olympiad to be held outside of Europe.

During their visit in 2006, the group signed an agreement with the local walking group that in essence called on both walking associations to keep each informed about the other’s activities and help other walking association around the world promote walking, all in the spirit of international friendship.
