USS Rentz crew enjoy liberty week on Saipan
Twenty-five crewmembers from the USS Rentz spent yesterday cleaning up and landscaping Sugar King Park.
“This our way of saying thank you for the hospitality and giving something back to the community,” said USS Rentz Cmdr. Dave Glenister. “It can be a big change for a city when a large army of people come to town.”
Despite the rain, the crewmembers were able to scrape moss, and use weed eaters and machetes to landscape the park, he said.
“This site was chosen to do landscaping and try to get the park nice enough so people can actually use it as a park,” Glenister added.
He said the 215 crewmembers are spending their liberty week on island enjoying snorkeling, shopping, and playing golf.
“[Golf] is always very popular,” he added.
Many of the members, including Glenister, enjoy the cultural aspect Saipan offers and will spend time visiting museums, he said.
During lunch yesterday, Glenister and Saipan Mayor Juan Tudela presented each other with plaques of appreciation.
“We’re very happy to be here,” the commander said. “It’s nice to see a little bit of America. The crew is very grateful.”
The USS Rentz is based in San Diego, Calif., and named after World War II Navy Chaplain George S. Rentz.
