Recidivist arrested anew
Diego Salas Mundo, reportedly the CNMI’s record-holder for having the longest criminal history, was arrested again yesterday in Susupe.
This time, the 47-year-old Mundo allegedly stole $50 cash through deception and a truck’s battery worth $80 belonging to an apartment owner.
At the hearing, Superior Court associate judge Kenneth Govendo set Mundo’s bail at $1,000 cash, as the court had earlier imposed.
Preliminary hearing was set for Sept. 24.
Detective Abraham Villagomez stated in his report that preliminary police’s investigation showed that on Aug. 26 or 27, 2008, Mundo called Luis Camacho and told him that the M-Camacho Apartment in Garapan had no water.
Mundo asked $50 from Camacho, supposedly for a water company to fill up the water tank at the apartment.
Villagomez said it was discovered that the defendant never used the $50 to fill the water tank after one of the tenants complained to Camacho that there was no water supply that night.
Later, Mundo moved out of the apartment without notifying Camacho. He also failed to return the keys to the apartment.
Villagomez said Camacho was also surprised when he opened the hood of his truck and discovered that the battery was no longer there.
Court records show that Mundo has 13 separate convictions and 22 criminal cases on top of numerous violations of court orders and probation.
Last April he was arrested for harassing businesses and their customers. At the time, he was under the influence of alcohol.
In February 2007, Superior Court associate judge David A. Wiseman sentenced Mundo to two years in prison.
Wiseman said that in his sentencing order in a 2001 criminal case, he noted that Mundo’s release from jail only results in him committing more crimes and continuously placing members of the society in danger.
