Ex-convict gets 2 yrs for possessing 2 stolen guns
An ex-convict who was found in possession of two stolen guns was sentenced yesterday to two years in prison.
U.S. District Court for the NMI Chief Judge Alex R. Munson ordered Edward Lee Santos to spend 24 months in jail for one count of a felon in possession of firearms and one count of possession of stolen firearms.
Munson gave Santos credit for the time he has already served in jail.
After completing his prison term, Santos will be placed on three years of supervised release.
Munson required the defendant to perform 100 hours of community service during the probationary period and directed him to pay a $200 special assessment fee during his prison term.
Santos was also directed to participate in a substance abuse treatment program approved by the U.S. Probation Office, which may include testing to determine whether he has returned to using drugs.
After the hearing, the judge remanded the defendant into the custody of the U.S. Marshal.
Attorney Loren Sutton served as counsel for Santos. Assistant U.S. Attorney Beverly McCallum represented the U.S. government.
Santos entered a plea agreement with the U.S. government. He pleaded guilty to all counts in the indictment last May 14.
The defendant was found in possession of a .223 cal. Bushmaster rifle and .22LR cal. Ruger rifle on Aug. 27 to Sept. 4, 2007, knowing that the two firearms had been stolen from a residence on Saipan.
At the time the defendant had been convicted of a felony burglary in the Superior Court, according to the prosecution.
