The Karidat social service has called on the Legislature to keep its teen center open by provide funds for the program

Angie V. Deleon Guerrero, executive director at Karidat, said the House of Manhoben will run out of funds at the end of this month.

Over the years, the House of Manhoben has been a sub-grantee of federal funds from the Criminal Justice Planning Agency. The current grant will expire on Sept. 30, 2008. As of last Friday, Karidat has not received word about continuation of funding for the program.

“Due to the lack of funding beyond Sept. 30, Karidat has no other resources nor option but to close the Teen Center,” Deleon Guerrero said.

She said the Legislature could help by appropriating at least $12,250 for the “bare necessities” of the House of Manhoben just to tie it over until the CJPA becomes available in January 2009. About $8,000 is for the salary, and $4,000 for the health insurance and benefits of the program coordinator.

“I hope that you can help us with a proactive approach to help Karidat keep its door open for the many youths who come to avail themselves with the program offered at the Teen Center,” Deleon Guerrero said.
