Tinian, Corrections oust foes
Tinian and the Department of Corrections eliminated their opponents after recording contrasting victories in make-up playoff games in the Inaugural PTI Inter-Government/Business Basketball League Saturday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
Tinian defeated Bank of Guam, 101-90, controlling the game early before relaxing a bit in the fourth quarter en route to an 11-point win.
The BOG Express absorbed its second loss in the playoffs and was out of contention for the title.
Tinian, which lost to PTI in the first round of the playoffs via forfeiture, kept its finals bid alive despite playing with only six players against the Express.
J.R. Reyes and Peter Mendiola led Tinian’s rousing start combining for 17 to give the visitors an earl 29-17 lead.
Ringo Reyes and Julian Santos joined the scoring spree in the second quarter, which ended with Tinian leading by a bigger margin, 58-35.
Tinian continued to enjoy a comfortable advantage in the third period as all of its five players on the court hit their marks.
Entering the final canto, Tinian was ahead, 75-51, and James Villacrusis’ one-man show was not enough to bring the Express back into the game and steal the win.
Villacrusis led all scorers with 28 points, nailing 13 of them in the final quarter.
J.R. Reyes finished with 27 points, while Ringo added 23, Manglona and Santos chipped in 19 and 15 markers, respectively, while Borja contributed 12.
In the second game, Corrections and the Legislature played the remaining eight minutes, 37 seconds of their power outage-suspended match.
The Corrections-Legislature tiff resumed with the game tied at 69-all and ended with the former on top, 100-84.
Thanks to Luis Iguel and Jeffrey Quitugua, who did not play in the suspended match Thursday night, but showed up for the continuation of the game.
Iguel and Qutugua combined for 24 of DOC’s 31 points in the last eight minutes of the fourth period.
With the win, Corrections still has a chance to make it to the finals. Its next assignment will be the loser of the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs and PTI game tonight.
Tinian will duel Autonomous tomorrow with the loser joining the Lawmakers and Express in the showers.
