Sonics wallop Rollers II to keep unbeaten record
As expected, league-leader Southern Sonics demolished the struggling Rollers II, 53-30, in the 2008 Saipan Rotary Club Youth Basketball League Thursday night at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
The 23-point win strengthened the Sonics’ hold to the No. 1 spot in the team standings, ahead by two victories against the San Antonio Sixers (3-0) and the CNMI Junior Nationals (3-1)
No Sonics players scored in double figures, but the Jesse Tudela-mentored squad had a balanced offense getting eight points apiece from three players and drawing contributions from nine others.
Mark Dela Cruz, Augustine Hocog and Mike Eclevia nailed eight markers apiece.
Dela Cruz was part of the Sonics’ starting five and went on to make his presence felt in the first quarter, drilling all his points in that period.
Eclevia added four points to lift the Sonics to a 25-14 halftime lead.
Leo Galarse stated the second half with a triple and added four more points in the ensuing play, while Hocog, who had only one field goal in the first half, chipped in six to help the Sonics cruised to a victory.
The Rollers II recorded their second lowest output in a game. The Zachary Babauta-coached squad had their worst offensive game against the Sixers, making only 28 points.
Against Sonics, the Rollers II’s highest scorer—Eugene Manglona—had only seven points. Mike Manglona was the only other Rollers II player to nail more than one field goal, scoring on a layup and a triple.
The rest of he Rollers II players combined for a dismal 16 points.
The loss was the Rollers II’s fifth in as any games, keeping them at the bottom of the team standings.
Meanwhile, one team will enter the win column after tonight’s game between the Suns and the Chalan Kanoa Saints. The Suns and Saints have identical 0-3 slates.
