Shell gas stations on Saipan lowered prices overnight Friday despite a slight jump in global oil costs linked to Hurricane Ike’s path through the Gulf of Mexico.

In a statement, Eloy Lizama, president of Shell Marianas, said prices at stations in the CNMI would drop for the second time in less than a month Friday night. Prices, he said, would lower by 10 cents for Shell’s regular and premium gas and by 15 cents for diesel fuel. The price change had yet to take effect at press time.

“Shell will again lower the price of Shell unleaded and Shell premium gasoline and Shell diesel fuel,” Lizama said, adding that since the company’s most recent price reduction on Aug. 28, the cost of gas for Shell had “declined and Shell will pass these savings on to our customers.”

Based on previous figures, Shell’s move brings its prices on Saipan to $4.37 per gallon for regular, self-served gas, $4.50 per gallon for regular gas with full service. Premium gas prices fall to $4.54 per gallon self-served and $4.66 per gallon with full service. Diesel prices come to $5,19 per gallon.

The price drop arrives as fears over Hurricane Ike’s progression through the Gulf of Mexico and its impact on energy platforms there caused oil prices to rise in the New York Mercantile Exchange Friday over their recent five-month low by 82 cents to $101.69 per barrel.

Meanwhile, statistics from AAA show the CNMI still has some of the highest gas prices in the United States. The current national average for a gallon of regular gas is $3.67.

NEW SHELL PRICES
SELF SERVICE FULL SERVICE
Regular $4.37 $4.50
Premium $4.54 $4.66
Diesel $5.19 $5.19
