A solution to keep track of lawmakers’ allowances

In reference to the Rota and Tinian lawmakers’ monthly subsidies (otherwise known as official representation, also known by our man’amko for both islands as O.R.: As a former station supervisor for Northwest Airlines (Saipan), one solution to the unaccounted/unaudited subsidies my company thought of is to issue a corporate card allowing me use whenever I travel on official trips. The card itself is programmed in that it only allows me to use it for hotel, restaurant, car rental, and gas expenses. Purchases in bars, department stores, and Ace Hardware are not allowable. If I should choose to use it on a personal basis other than official, then I will be held accountable.

To my knowledge, CNMI PSS is using the same concept to reduce cost and for greater accountability. It is much better to keep track of all charges on it, the card will be more visible, and it can be audited instantly. I think this will be the solution for all of our CNMI citizens who may be in doubt, and the lawmakers in question can rest easily. Biba Marianas!
