BoG expands ‘Choose Green’ program to NMI
Hagatna, Guam—The Bank of Guam is expanding its “Choose Green” campaign on Guam and launching the program in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands on Monday, Sept. 15, 2008.
In an effort to reduce waste on the islands, the corporate recycling program focuses on educating its staff and communities on the importance of making smart choices and choosing to recycle.
The Bank of Guam will continue, through a customer incentive program, to distribute thousands of its familiar, and now larger cotton tote bags along with a list of participating merchants. The program will also be publicized through the media throughout Guam and the CNMI.
Participating merchants provide an incentive of 5 cents per cotton bag used—which is in lieu of using plastic bags. For example, if a customer uses two cotton bags rather than two plastic bags, 10 cents will be deducted from the total bill. This also saves on the merchant’s cost of each plastic bag, but more importantly prevents that plastic bag from taking more space in the islands’ limited trash sites.
“We are partnering with companies, who like us, believe that we must take the lead in protecting our environment. These partnerships help us to educate our citizens to learn good habits so that our choices are not harmful to our islands’ limited resources,” according to Lou Leon Guerrero, Bank of Guam president and board chair.
The expanding list of participating merchants in Guam and the CNMI will be released on Sept. 15, 2008. Interested merchants may contact Liza Beighley, assistant vice president/quality assurance officer at 472-5231 or visit the bank’s website for details at www.bankofguam.com. (BoG)
