Gov. Benigno R. Fitial has signed into law a bill naming a Rota baseball field after a retired government worker and former umpire.

The baseball field in Sinapalo, Rota, is now called the “Joaquin Mesngon Ogo Baseball Field” in recognition of Ogo’s “outstanding citizenship and contributions to the people of Rota.”

“Although Mr. Joaquin M. Ogo has been recognized on the municipal level, the Legislature deems it appropriate that his efforts be recognized Commonwealth-wide,” states the new law, signed by the governor on Tuesday.

Ogo began his public service in 1965 when he worked for the government’s agriculture agency. From 1972 to 1984, he worked as a bus driver on Rota. Also during the period from 1965 to 1975, he served as a volunteer baseball umpire on the island.

From 1985 to 1991, Ogo worked for Benjamin T. Manglona during the latter’s tenure as senator and then as a lieutenant governor. In 1992, Ogo retired from government service.

Ogo was born on Nov. 18, 1929 on Rota. He is married to Julita M. Ogo and they have 10 children.
