John Davis’ priorities

I have no idea why Ambrose Bennett considers it “ridiculous” to seek to be the Delegate to the United States Congress. It is a citizen’s civic duty not only to vote but also to run for office. The more candidates under our democratic system, the better.

As the Election Commission has pointed out, “the willingness to serve in a position of public trust strengthens the foundations of our democratic system and provides voters with more choices at the polls. By demonstrating [their] desire for public service, [candidates] are helping to build a stronger Northern Mariana Islands.”

I also do not know to which “two candidates” Mr. Bennett refers in his letter to the editor on Sept. 8. Public comments regarding public officials and candidates should not be so ambiguous and should clearly identify the person about whom the comments are made.

It is also not clear from Mr. Bennett’s letter if he is speaking on behalf of the newspapers.

I do know that John H. Davis Jr., candidate for the position of Delegate, has stated in community meetings, in meetings with individuals, and in writing what he is going to do and how he is going to get it done if elected.

John Davis has stated unequivocally that his priority will be to support a self-sufficient, self-reliant CNMI. He has stated that, as a first step toward self-sufficiency and self-reliance, he will introduce legislation to transfer our Exclusive Economic Zone and our surrounding waters to the control of the CNMI. He will also introduce legislation to establish a veterans’ medical facility here in the CNMI. And he has stated that he will push for the Small Business Administration and other federal economic agencies to set up offices here in the CNMI.

Well-informed and public-spirited citizens are important—no, more than important—they are essential to our democratic form of government and our well-being.

A public forum to meet John Davis, to listen to his views on what he can offer as the Delegate to the U.S. Congress, and to join in the discussion with any questions or concerns people may have, has been scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2008, at 4:30-6:30pm at the Multi-Purpose Center in Susupe, Saipan.

I urge all citizens to be informed voters and attend this public forum. And for more information about John Davis, check out davisforcongress.blogspot.
