A surveillance camera caught a then employee of Kagman Mobil Station allegedly stealing $300 cash in two incidents in July.

Police on Friday afternoon arrested the suspect, Edward Demapan Santos Jr., 20, of Navy Hill, for theft.

Santos was taken to the Superior Court yesterday morning for a bail hearing.

Associate Judge Kenneth Govendo imposed a $5,000 cash bail for the defendant’s temporary liberty and set the preliminary hearing for Sept. 17.

Detective Abraham Villagomez stated in his report that Jovita Flores, owner of Kagman Mobil Station, had called the Department of Public Safety to report a theft incident.

Villagomez said the preliminary investigation conducted by a police officer showed that one of the employees of the gasoline station stole money from a drop box behind the cashier’s counter.

The detective said the officer’s review of the surveillance camera footage from July 27, 2008, showed that Santos, who was wearing a Kagman Mobil Station uniform, was seen behind the cashier’s counter. Santos was observed writing on a piece of paper and looking outside the window.

When the cashier walked away from the counter to attend to customers, Santos allegedly went behind the cashier’s counter, reached into the drop box and took $200 cash.

At 12:30am Santos left the station and did not return, the detective said.

Last July 29, the gas station’s owner reported to DPS again that another $100 was logged into the cashier’s shift report from July 21, but the money was missing.

Villagomez said a review of the surveillance camera footage showed that on that day, Santos was seen behind the cashier’s counter, reaching for $100 from the drop box.

At the time, the cashier was outside, police said.
