The president of the U.S. West Coast Taekwondo Association has signified his intention to revive the sport on Saipan, according to Northern Marianas Amateur Sports Association president Michael A. White.

White said that Jay K. Shin earlier informed the NMASA about his arrival today with the goal of reestablishing the sports here in the CNMI.

White has recalled that several years ago NMASA had an active taekwondo association.

“As far as I know, no one is actively practicing this sport here now,” noted White in an email.

He said that Shin’s organization offers instruction and training for the sport of taekwondo.

White is informing those who are interested in organizing a taekwondo association to contact him at his email, mwhite@saipan.com.

Taekwondo is a contact sport, which is more popularly played in the Asian region such as Korea, Japan, and in the Philippines.

But athletes from New Zealand as well as Europe and the Middle East are now making their way in international competitions.

Taekwondo is the national sport of Korea. It was included as a demonstration sport in the 1988 Seoul Olympics and became a regular event at the Sydney 2000 Summer Games.
