A 794-lb. marlin was caught at the Budweiser 16th Annual All Micronesia Fishing Tournament held in Majuro, Marshall Islands last weekend.

The new record is owned by Alex Tretnoff, the captain of Team Pohnpei Fishing Club whose crew included his wife, Mary, and son, Alex Jr., representing the Federated States of Micronesia.

Their winning fish broke the seven-year record of 719 lbs. caught by Kyle Aliven in July 2001.

They not only went home with their record-breaking feat but also pocketed the top prize of $3,000.

Deloitte-Guam’s Chris Woseley also caught a huge 792-lb. marlin for second place, while Anja Andy of Marshalls Billfish Club reeled in a 648-pounder for third.

Pacific Magazine’s Karen Earnshaw wrote that it was the most successful competition ever in the Marshalls in terms of big fish.

Completing the 11-team field tournament with their ranking and captain were the following: fourth place Pohnpei Fishing Club, Conrad Engilberger (563 lbs.); Kwajelein Tight Lines, fifth Skip Bontham (260 lbs.); sixth Team BUDWEISER, Frank Shimizu Jr. (240 lbs.); seventh Marshalls British Club Scott Howe (200 lbs.); eighth Joshuya Japan, Shutar Seki (95 lbs.); and Taiwan Fishing Association, ninth Ping-Nan Cheng (59 lbs.).

Two teams did not caught any marlin. They were Kwajelein Lajkaan under Lee Pennington and PAGO PAGO Billfish under Gary Sword.

In the Tuna Class, Deloitte-Guam’s Chris Woseley topped the category with his 65-lb. entry, while Taiwan Fishing Association’s Ping-Nan Chen was second with its 59 pounder.

Woseley also submitted the third heaviest catch in the category (57 lbs.) and fourth (49 lbs.).

Team Budweiser’s Frank Shimizu Jr. won the wahoo class with his 50-lb. catch and also with the second heaviest of 29 lbs.

Woseley also entered the two heaviest fish in the barracuda class with his 21-lb. and seven-lb. entries.
