Students take part in pilot program
Students at three Public School System high schools will take part in a pilot program this school year focusing on creating portfolios to showcase their academic and work experience.
“We are really focused on student achievement. When students leave high school, they are unprepared. The [portfolios] will show the employer that they do have the skills necessary,” said Karen Borja, principal of Marianas High School. Tinian High School and Kagman High School will join MHS in the pilot program this year.
The portfolio will highlight the students’ academic work, as well as their work experience and extracurricular activities, Borja said.
“It will be very individualized for each child,” she said. “It’s the students’ expression for themselves. It will also show they have some computer skills.” Each student, freshman through senior, will work on their portfolio throughout the year, Borja said. Students in 12th grade will present their portfolio to a panel to critique. Freshmen students will update their portfolio throughout their high school career,” Borja said.
“It’s sort of a living document,” she added.
