The G-Stars finally barged into the win column after two straight losses in the 2008 Saipan Rotary Club 18-under Youth Basketball League by winning over the Chalan Kanoa Saints, 76-67, last Thursday night at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

Nate Mateo and Lia Rangamar provided the firepower for the G-Stars as they finished with 21 and 17 points, respectively.

Rangamar shot four of his team’s seven makes from three-point range.

With the win, the G-Stars now occupy solo 6th place with a 1-2 card and still way behind the leaders.

The loss, on the other hand, put the Saints in eighth place with their 0-2 record, which is just half a game ahead of ninth-running G-Rollers II’s 0-3.

The Southern Sonics are on top with 3-0, G-Rollers I second (2-0), CNMI Jr. Nationals third (2-1), Kontenders fourth (2-2), San Antonio Sixers fifth (1-0), Suns seventh (0-1).

Luigi Reyes and Roy Norita led the Saints’ offensive thrust as they poured in 28 and 24 points, respectively but the team couldn’t get their rhythm back into the game following an early close match.

Earlier, the Saints also dropped their opening game of the season to the front-running Southern Sonics, who scored yet another domineering 91-56 count on Sept. 3.

G-Stars 76 – N. Mateo 21, L. Rangamar 17, D. Mateo 9, S. Rangamar 7, Palacios 7, Sablan 5, Kenty 4, Jung 3, Manalili 2, Guerrero 1.
