BOE to examine transfer process
A school principal has expressed concern that students are having difficulty transferring from a private school to a public school without having to repeat their previous grade.
Calvary Christian Academy principal Scott Norman said he received a call from a student who was having trouble transferring to a public school. Norman said the student met the requirements necessary to complete the sophomore year at a private school, but because he did not meet the requirements set by the public school, he was going to be held back.
“I’m just concerned because this has never been a problem before,” Norman said. “I’ve always assumed before…that the transfers have gone smoothly.”
Private school students must complete 24 credits to graduate while public school students must complete 28 credits.
“We’re looking more than anything else at student achievement,” he said. “When you compare student achievement, there should be some way to transfer out of the private school to public school without any penalty.”
Board of Education member Galvin Deleon Guerrero agreed with Norman that a board committee should look at this issue and make sure both public and private schools are focusing on standards and benchmarks. If that is done, the transition process should be fairly seamless, Guerrero added.
Twenty-two percent of CNMI students attend private schools.
