The U.S. Department of Agriculture is increasing the amount of grant money the Public School System will receive for their nutrition programs this year.

PSS will receive an additional $600,000 to cover the higher costs of living, for a total of approximately $7.7 million, said Federal Programs advisor Tim Thornburgh.

“We really, really need that,” he said of the increase.

Rice alone has doubled, he added, and “the cost of milk is way up.”

PSS will use the grant to increase the amount of money food vendors are paid for each meal, Thornburgh said.

“We’re confident it’ll be enough,” he said. “It should be sufficient based on the current day costs.”

Vendors on Saipan will now be paid $2.85 per lunch, a 10-cent increase from last year. Vendors on Rota and Tinian will receive $3 per lunch meal.

Students will continue to pay 75 cents per lunch meal.
