The use of software among school children has become an important tool in students’ developmental stage. In recognition of this, the CNMI Council on Developmental Disabilities brought in an expert to train teachers on how to use certain computer programs that would assist students in enhancing their reading, writing and learning skills.

Eleri Hanley from the England-based Crick Software Company just finished conducting the seminar from Aug. 28 to 29 at the Aqua Resort Club.

Part of the three-day activity was a demonstration and display of assistive technologies for people with disabilities on Aug. 30, attended by parents and some members of the community.

Hanley explained that the Crick Software is an educational software company for children of all abilities.

“It’s not just for those with special needs or with disabilities,” Hanley said.

Through the use of multi-media, teachers would be able to help children easily absorb concepts or ideas.

She said their products are now being used and are in great demand in the United States, Canada, and around the world.

The training was jointly participated by the CNMI Council on Development Disabilities, Public School System and the CNMI Association of Families with Disabilities.

Coordinator for the three-day activity was Pam Sablan from the Assistive Technology Act Program for the CNMI Council on Developmental Disabilities.

The purpose of the AT Fair was to demonstrate and inform the CNMI community of assistive technology devices and software that are available for individuals with print and learning disabilities.

Crick Software products include Clicker 5, Clicker paint, ClozePro, Wordbar, Penfriend and Write Online.

PSS JIT members presented Braille Assistive Technology Devices and Software, Braille Writing Devices and Notetakers, Print Disabilities/Learning disabilities Assistive Technology Devices and Software.
