Car cuts down post on Middle Road
A white van slammed into an electrical post along Middle Road at about 4pm yesterday, cutting the pole down and its upper half left hanging in the air, with the power lines still attached to it.
The incident slowed down traffic in the area.
Witnesses said two Asian looking guys alighted from the massively wrecked Toyota Siena with plate number ABP 479, including the driver who they said was badly hurt. The other passenger immediately ran limping to a nearby store, apparently to call for help.
Rescuers and police arrived minutes after the freak accident to direct traffic.
The electric post was cut into pieces, with the upper part including the highway lighting still hanging by the power lines.
A crew from the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. said it would take about two hours to fix the power lines in the affected area.
The accident happened right in front of the offices of the Department of Public Works, Saipan Cell Communications and Pizza Hut.
One witness who works at a private company near the area said he heard a loud screech, followed by a louder bang. He immediately went outside and saw the wrecked Toyota van.
He said the car was northbound. Other witnesses said the car twisted before it slammed into the post.
Police have yet to issue a report of the accident, which compounded woes for some business establishments in the area that are already heavily affected by the power crisis.
