Muslims in the CMNI started yesterday their month-long observance of Ramadan at their prayer center in Garapan.

Monwar Hossain, the acknowledged leader of the Saipan Baitus Salam Jame Masjid, said they have been doing the rituals here since 1982.

There are currently around 500 Muslims working or living in the CNMI.

Hossain said they come from different countries in Asia, including Pakistan, Bangladesh, the Philippines, Malaysia, China, Sri Lanka, India and Indonesia.

Ramadan is a religious observance that takes place during the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, believed to be the month in which the Qu’ran was revealed to the Archangel Gabriel, who later revealed it to the Prophet Muhammad.

During this month of fasting, Muslims don’t eat or drink from dawn until sunset.

This religious rite is meant to teach Muslims to be patient and peaceful.

“My message is that we want to pray for peace for all people,” Hossain said.
