While its $1,000 big money tournament last Saturday had a lukewarm response, Top Pool Bar is hoping to have more success with the return of its weekly 8-ball competition starting this Aug. 30 at the Garapan watering hole and sports bar.

Manager and owner Zheng Jian Qing said unlike the $1,000 Professional 8-Ball Tournament, entry fee for the weekly competition is a more modest $15 per player.

However, like the big money tournament, the still unnamed 8-ball competition every Saturday will continue to be off-limits to himself as well as fellow pool sharks Roger Espiritu and Jerry Soriano.

Zheng said he is taking himself out of the tournament and will not extend invitations to Espiritu and Soriano to allow other up-and-coming cue artists to take the spotlight in the weekly 8-ball event.

He added that it also makes sense that they be excluded from the competition, as their skill and experience tend to scare away the island’s other pool aficionados.

With the $15 entry fee, the top purse for the tournament is expected to be $110, provided all 16 slots are filled. Correspondingly, Top Pool Bar will award $80 and $50 for second and third placers, respectively.

Like previous competitions at Top Pool Bar, players can warm up and practice for free before the 8pm start of the 8-ball tournament.

Top Pool Bar, located along Hotel Street Garapan a stone’s throw away from the Paseo de Marianas, is as spacious as it is modern and boasts of two 9-1/2-by-5-foot tables usually found in professional tournaments abroad.
