The Kontenders gained a share of the lead in the 2008 Saipan Rotary Club Youth Basketball League after outclassing the Garapan Rollers II, 58-48, Tuesday night at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

The victory improved the Kontenders’ record to 2-0, putting them in a tie for first place with the Southern Sonics.

The loss dropped the G-Rollers II to a 0-2 slate, keeping them at the bottom of the team standings with the G-Stars.

A balanced offense coupled with the G-Rollers II’s erratic plays in the second half helped the Konteders record their second straight victory.

Trevor Ogumoro led the Kontenders’ attack, firing 16 points and drew support from his teammates.

Soane Pua, Wayne Dawe, and Jester Kaipat added eight apiece and June Laniyo and J.R. Nogis chipped in six each.

Jerry Mabini paced the G-Rollers II with 16 points, while Raymond Babauta contributed nine. Besides Mabini and Babauta, only two other G-Rollers II players scored more than one field goal against the Kontenders.

The G-Rollers II started strong, taking a 27-18 halftime lead, as Mabini and Babauta traded baskets in the first half.

But the G-Rollers II’s fortunes changed in the second half when they began committing turnovers, collapsing against the Kontenders’ pressure defense.

The Kontenders capitalized on the G-Rollers’ miscues, making easy layups on fastbreak plays.

The Kotenders stole the lead, 36-34, on an uncontested layup from Ogumoro, with 11:30 left in the game. They never relinquished the lead from thereon, as they held the G-Rollers to 14 points in the last 10 minutes of the game.

Kontenders 58 – Ogumoro 16, Pua 8, Dawe 8 Kaipat 8, Nogis 6, Laniyo 6, Dillay 4, Dome’e 2.

G-Rollers II 48 – Mabini 16, R. Babauta 9, E. Manglona 6, Norita 4, Reyes 2, M. Manglona 2, Santos 2, Castro 2.
