Kontenders down Suns in Rotary debut
The Kontenders outshone the Suns in their debut, recording a 48-36 victory in the 2008 Saipan Rotary Club Youth Basketball League Thursday night at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
Soane Pua and Jester Kaipat paced the Kontenders, firing 111 points apiece, while Eugene Dillay chipped in eight, and Trevor Ogumoro contributed five
Ogumoro made the Kontenders first two baskets, while Pua and Dillay took charge of the team’s offense in the remaining minutes of the first half.
Kaipat drilled seven of his total points in the first half, including a triple at the end of the first half, while Pua had six to give the Kontenders a 26-12 halftime lead.
The Kontenders were never threatened from thereon, as the Suns lacked the luster they need to recover and still the game. The only bright spot for the Suns was Jim Brel, who scored 14 points and failed to get support from his teammates.
Josh Kiyoshi made nine points for the Suns, but his baskets came when the game was already decided.
The win put the Kontenders in the company of the Southern Sonics, Garapan Rollers I and San Antonio Sixers, who all won their opening game this season.
The Suns joined opening-week losers CNMI Junior Nationals, G-Rollers II and the G-Stars.
Meanwhile, yesterday’s game between the CNMI Junior Nationals and the G-Rollers 1 was cancelled due to miscommunication.
Rotary games are supposed to be played only from Monday to Thursday, but organizers had set a match Friday night.
Only three players from the Junior Nationals showed up for the game, prompting the rescheduling of the match.
