First time’s a charm for the newest member of Saipan Golf Association as Ron Hodges won its August Ace of the Month Tournament held last Sunday at the Marianas Country Club.

The Marianas High School teacher nipped two other SGA members for the monthly plum after all three finished with identical net scores of 68.

Hodges, who fired a tourney best gross score of 75 (38-37), beat out Tony Guerrero and Larry I. Guerrero with a par on the playoff hole. Tony Guerrero (85 gross, 38-47) took second place with a bogey on hole No. 11, while Larry Guerrero (87, 44-43) needed two extra putts to seal the deal.

Aside from taking home the August award, Hodges also had the most birdies of the day at four, followed by Tony Guerrero, Rick Kautz, and Ned Norita with three apiece. Manny Alvarez, Steve Balakrishna, Carl Hocog, Ed Manibusan, Ray Nicolas, and Jung Eun Taeck also recorded a birdie each Sunday.

Another outstanding performance recorded Sunday was an eagle chip into the par-five hole No. 13 made by veteran Ray San Nicolas.

On other events, the longest drive belonged to Ray San Nicolas in hole No. 2, while long knocker Kautz topped hole No. 11. Mariano Fajardo, Ray San Nicolas, and Hodges, for their parts, claimed closest to the pins in holes No. 6, 8, 12, and 16, respectively. The highest gross score at the event was 104 and the highest net was 83.
