Despite the island’s own power plant to lean on, Rota residents are reportedly also affected by the power crisis on Saipan—but not as badly as the people on Saipan.

This, according to the Mayor of Rota’s Liaison Office on Capitol Hill, which assists Rota residents when they come to Saipan.

“The people always complain about the rising cost of electricity, basic commodities and especially gasoline,” said Liaison Assistant Coordinator Allan A. Taitano.

The power plant on Rota, Taitano said, is very much operational but residents of Rota also pay the same amount of electricity as well as prices in food.

“They always complain about having no increase in salaries,” Taitano said when asked to comment regarding the ongoing crisis.

“Well, it’s not as bad as here on Saipan but the 2,000 household there are trying to cope with the crisis,” he said.

Rota Mayor Joseph Inos Sr. could not be reached for comment as he is in the U.S. mainland on family business.

The Mayor’s Chief of Staff, Cris Ayuyu, was also busy with preparations of the upcoming fiesta there.

But despite the volatile situation, Taitano said business is as usual on Rota.

“Everybody in CNMI is feeling the brunt. We feel that we should all contribute to help solve the problem,” he said. [B][I](Nazario Rodriguez)
