USS Mustin crew cleans up bunker
Approximately 20 personnel from the USS Mustin decided to forgo scuba diving and the beach Wednesday and devoted their time to cleaning the airport bunker.
More than 300 officers and crewmembers from the Mustin are enjoying a few days off on Saipan. The group leaves Friday.
“We’ve had a great time. The hospitality has been fabulous,” Commander James Jones said.
Yesterday, about 20 crewmembers spent their day cleaning and mowing the grass around the bunker.
“We really feel the least we can do is participate in efforts like this,” Jones said.
Jones said several crewmembers who visited Saipan in the past liked the island and recommended returning for their liberty time.
“When the opportunity presented itself, folks thought it would be a good idea to stop here,” he added.
Saipan Mayor Juan Tudela took part in the cleanup with the crew yesterday.
“I’m very happy and glad they came to Saipan,” he said.
Tudela said he is grateful that the crew cut the grass surrounding the bunker because it was growing too high.
“They worked really hard,” he said. “There was no fooling around between 8am and 2pm.”
Jones said many of the crewmembers are staying in hotels and scuba diving in their free time.
“They’re having a lot of fun,” he added.
The VFW set up the activities for the crew during their week on island.
The USS Mustin is stationed in Yokosuka, Japan. The ship was sent to the coast of Myanmar from May 13 to June 5 to provide aid for the citizens after the cyclone. But when the Myanmar government did not allow outside aid for several weeks, the Mustin was placed back on its original schedule.
