‘CK Roundhouse memorial will cost $250K’
Former Rep. William S. Torres estimates the rehabilitation and creation of a memorial at the Chalan Kanoa Roundhouse will cost $250,000 to $300,000.
“It could be less but it shouldn’t be more,” Council adviser Torres said at a meeting Tuesday with members of the First Leadership Park and Memorial Courtyard.
The memorial center would sit on 785 square meters, with an additional 942 square meters requested, in Chalan Kanoa, across from the U.S. Post Office.
According to a preliminary design plan, the open memorial will have a stone granite wall engraved with names of leaders and persons of great influence. Pictures and various items will honor the past. A set of restrooms will also be available to the public.
“It’s nothing fancy. We already have the basic structure,” Torres said, adding it is more about remembering and honoring the people of the past.
“We’ll try to make it was aesthetically harmonious as possible,” he added.
The Council has set December 2009 as the target date for the completion of the project.
The committee is asking members of the public to nominate appointed and elected Saipan officials who served before the Spanish invasion for the stonewall. The public can contact the Saipan and Northern Islands Municipal Council at 664-2700/1 or contact Saipan Tribune reporter Kristi Eaton at kristi_eaton@saipantribune.com.
