The 2008 SaipanCell/Palau Community Association Softball Tournament will be held next month at the Dandan Elementary School Ballfield with the champion team guaranteed to receive $1,000.

PCA president Rufino Aguon said they decided to increase the pot money from $500 to $1,000 to encourage more teams in joining the tournament, which will be slated for two weekends in September.

The first week of the tournament will be held on Sept. 20 and 21, while the playoffs are set for Sept. 27 and 28.

PCA will be accepting a maximum of 12 teams with each squad needing to pay an entrance fee of $400.

Interested teams have until Sept. 12 to submit their rosters and pay and registration fee. A mandatory meeting at the NMC Gymnasium is also set on the last day of the registration at 5pm. Schedule of games will be determined at the meeting.

The tournament will have a double-elimination format.

Aside from the $1,000 cash prize, this year’s champion team will go home with a specially-carved wooden trophy.

The Inaugural SaipanCell/PCA softball tourney last year drew eight teams with No Ka Oi/Yes to Casino winning the championship game against the Warriors.

No Ka Oi went undefeated in the elimination round, earning a twice-to-beat advantage over the Warriors in the finals.

No Ka Oi shut out Aguaguat, 11-0, in its first game, then cruised to back-to-back wins via a 3-1 triumph against the Warriors. It swept the elimination round after another shut-out victory over Sedi Kau, 14-0.

The eventual champion took the title early when it prevailed in Game 1 of the finals, 6-3.

No Ka Oi was composed of Joey C. Dela Cruz, Mario Sablan, Mel Sakisat, Ton Camacho, Manny Sablan, Jerry Ayuyu, J.R. Suel, J.J. Laniyo, Roy Celis, Nick Castro, Elias Saralu, Toi Celis, Julian Camacho, and Ben Tagabuel. Roque Celis managed the team.

The softball tournament is a fundraiser for PCA, which is building an Abai (Palauan word for meeting place) on Navy Hill.
