Mieko to compete in XTERRA Japan
Mieko Carey will take part in the 2008 XTERRA Japan set for Aug. 30 in Marunuma, Gunma Prefecture.
Carey, who topped this year’s XTERRA Saipan Championships, is expected to use the off-road triathlon event in her home country as preparation to the 2008 XTERRA Wold Championships set for Oct. 26 in Maui, Hawaii.
Like the regimen she used when she and her husband Kevin took part in the recent 2008 Ironman Kansas 70.3, Carey continues to follow the training schedule 2008 XTERRA Saipan champion Andrew Noble gave her early this year.
That entails her to go on two-three bike rides, some of them in hilly terrain, on Wednesdays. Thursdays and Saturdays are reserved for running exercises, while Sunday includes two hours of biking and an hour of running.
Carey also does her swimming practices almost daily at the Kan Pacific Swimming Pool, where she serves as assistant coach for the Saipan Swim Club.
Sponsoring her trip to Japan and Maui is Carey’s longtime supporter Joshua Berger Law Office. She also hopes other businesses would help her finance her trip to XTERRA Japan as well as XTERRA World Championship.
Carey earned a third straight trip to Maui after finishing second behind XTERRA Saipan women’s champion and professional triathlete Renata Bucher of Switzerland with a time of 3:33:29.
In the Tagaman seven days later, the pilates instructor came in third behind Bucher and fellow Japanese transplant Maimi Shimizu in 3:32:00. She then concluded her March run with a first-place finish in the Guam XTERRA, conquering the event in 2:47:15.
She and Kevin also took part in the aforementioned Ironman Kansas 70.3 last June 15 where she came in sixth in her age group (30-34 years old) and was the 21st woman overall to cross the finish line in a time 5:31:16.97.
