Kazuyoshi Miura’s telephone conference call for his Los Angeles hearing ended abruptly Saturday morning at the Department of Corrections in Susupe, but the Asian media were out in full force covering every detail.

The connection was lost before the attorneys could find out when the next court date would be set, said Assistant Attorney General Jeffery Warfield Sr. outside the DOC.

Miura waived his appearance in Los Angeles during the conference call.

In Los Angeles, a professor testified for the prosecution about the differences in Japan and the United State’s definitions of conspiracy. The professor said there are different types of conspiracies, Warfield said.

Celebrity attorney Mark Geragos, counsel for the 60-year-old Miura in L.A., cross-examined the professor, Warfield said. Geragos argued that Miura has already been tried and acquitted of conspiracy in Japan, Warfield said.

Bruce Berline, one of three legal counsels for Miura on Saipan, said after the call he would return to his office and talk with Geragos.

“Because of how the hearing was conducted, we were unable to really hear what was going on,” he said.

The media were not allowed into DOC to listen to the conference call, but several members of the Asian media camped out all morning waiting for the telephone conference to end.

The State of California is seeking Miura’s extradition on charges of murder and conspiracy to commit murder in connection with the killing of his wife in 1981. Miura has been in jail since he was arrested at the Saipan airport on Feb. 22.
