Statement from the Saipan Postmaster
Please allow me to respond to the concerns expressed by Mr. Bruce Bateman in his July 8 column printed in your publication.
First of all, let me say that I agree with Mr. Bateman that the theft of any mail is a serious offense. All reports of mail theft are thoroughly investigated by our Postal Inspection Service. I urge any Saipan customers who have concrete concerns about mail theft to share those concerns with me, so that I can forward to the details to our Postal Inspectors. Or, customers can report their mail theft concerns directly to the Postal Inspection Service online at http://postalinspectors.uspis.gov/
Having said that, I have seen no evidence that mail theft is ongoing reason for concern on Saipan, contrary to Mr. Bateman’s statements. Mr. Bateman also suggests in his opinion piece that insuring mail reduces the chances of it being stolen. While I disagree that there is any direct correlation between insurance and theft, I do recommend that customers purchase insurance for any valuables that are mailed.
I do agree with Mr. Bateman’s statement that the U.S. Postal Service is “…the best, most efficient…form of mail and package delivery on this planet. It is a pretty darned good deal to send a letter from here to Omaha or Boston, for the same price it takes to send it to Chalan Kanoa or Guam.”
I am committed to providing the best possible mail and shipping service, and I welcome customer feedback about how I might better serve the residents of Saipan.
