Health advocates from a myriad of government agencies gathered yesterday in the Department of Public Health’s conference room to discuss their plans for September’s Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment Awareness month.

The awareness program facilitates the prevention and treatment of substance abuse, which promotes better mental health for people of all ages. The nationwide event will also raise awareness and understanding of mental health issues, mental illness and substance abuse.

The committee also discussed issues relating to the Prevention Program Fair, Challenge Masters, Tobacco Prevention Education Workshop, smoke-free establishments and youth advocacy.

This year’s theme is “Join the voice for recovery: Real people, Real recovery.”

“This is the 19th year of the establishment of the program,” said committee chair Tony Benavente.

“A highlight of the meeting was the discussion of the Mass that will kick off on Aug. 21, [and] the proclamation signing on Aug. 27,” he added.

The group will meet again next Friday in the DPH conference room where they will have increased access to multi-departmental resources.

The deadline for submitting activity propositions from all departments is Aug. 15.

The Community Guidance Center, the Department of Public Health and their community partners observe this event annually.
