Seven bands will be joining Beach Road Magazine’s Saipan Summer Jam, while other interested groups continue to inquire about how they can join the biggest gig in town.

“It’s definitely getting more exciting by the day,” Susan Marchitti, Beach Road Magazine account manager said. “We’ve been getting a lot of phone calls from bands that are interested to join.”

Marchitti said a maximum of 10 bands would be allowed to participate in the Saipan Summer Jam. Deadline for submission of entries is 5 p.m. Aug. 18.

The event will be held on Aug. 23 at Saipan Grand Hotel’s Club V and will feature up-and-coming bands competing for a chance to finally get out of the garage and perform actual gigs.

A six-member panel of judges, composed of individuals from the local music scene, will decide on who the top three winners will be. Judging will be based on showmanship, originality of performance, audience impact through texters’ choice and overall performance.

Cash prizes await the winners who will also get a chance to perform at Palms Resort Saipan’s “Back-to-School Summer Bash” on Aug. 30. Other exciting prizes will also be given away.

Minako Kayagaki, Palms Resort Saipan advertising sales representative, said the hotel’s management has decided to have the Saipan Summer Jam winners highlight Palms Resort Saipan’s back-to-school event.

“We would like to offer the stage to the top three bands for our ‘Back-to-School Summer Bash,’” Kayagaki said.

All participating bands will be featured in the special Saipan Summer Jam section of the August issue of Beach Road Magazine. They will also be required to bring their own instruments; stage hands will be available to help with the setup of instruments.

The contest is open to all amateur bands with at least two members. A sound check session will be held on site prior to the event. Each band will be given no more than 20 minutes to perform.
