I would like to thank Mr. Tony Pellegrino for taking a big step toward reducing our unemployment among resident workers. Mr. Pellegrino is a successful businessman who started the Marianas Trades Institute, which aims at training residents in vocational trades such as carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, and other skills. Mr. Pellegrino is unselfishly funding this school with his own money to allow us to rely more on resident workers than nonresident workers. He is putting his money where his mouth is. The increase in the minimum wage will also entice more residents to work in the private sector. It’s about time, because we rely too heavily on foreign workers. Currently only 20-30 percent local hire is required for private businesses. The more residents we have working, the more money stays here in the CNMI. This also means that less money will be sent overseas. We need more businessmen like Pellegrino. He is investing in the CNMI residents. Kudos to you and best wishes on the Marianas Trades Institute.
