Early morning earthquake hits NMI
A 4.9 magnitude earthquake shook parts of the Marianas Islands yesterday morning at 3:23am. There were no immediate report of damage or injuries.
According to the Emergency Management Office, the earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 4.9 on the Richter scale and occurred at a depth of about 6.2 miles, located at latitude 16.828 degrees north and 148.094 degrees east of the Marianas region. This is about 165 miles east northeast of Anatahan and 195 miles northeast of Saipan.
According to EMO, the earthquake did not generate enough energy to call for a Pacific-wide tsunami alert.
The EMO said that one local resident called the office to verify the quake.
“A resident called the office and asked if we had an earthquake. The [office] called me at home and then I checked it in the morning at approximately 7am,” Geophysical Seismic Technician Section supervisor Juan Camacho told Saipan Tribune.
“The scale showed that we had an earthquake, and the quake only happened for a few seconds. Only one resident called yesterday and asked regarding this matter,” he added.
There were also no reports of aftershocks, he said.
