Organizers of the annual Tinian Nagasaki Hiroshima Peace Ceremony have begun preparations for their sixth ceremony since its inception in 2003. This year’s ceremony will be held on August 6th, the anniversary of the 1945 American atomic bombing of Hiroshima, Japan by the Enola Gay, which took off from the island of Tinian.

Scheduled events for the ceremony include a Sounding of the Sirens at 9:15 am at the Children’s Peace Monument that will coincide with the moment of silence at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Ceremony in Japan; 9:15 am is the local time the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. A special multi-faith prayer for peace is also scheduled for the morning portion of the peace ceremony. An evening candlelight vigil featuring performances of peace songs and poetry by community members will be held at 7:00 pm on the night of the ceremony. Thirteen students and two teachers from Tinian Junior Senior High School’s sister-school Hiroshima Koryo High School will arrive on Tinian on August 4 as special participants.

Organizers of the event are asking community members to support the annual ceremony by participating in the painting and ground preparation events scheduled for the weeks prior to the ceremony. For more information please contact James M. Mendiola Jr., at tinianpeaceceremony@gmail.com.
