The Rotary Club of Saipan has named businessman Anthony Pellegrino as this year’s Citizen of the Year during the group’s Tuesday meeting at the Hyatt Regency Saipan.

The Rotary conferred the award on Pellegrino after a rigorous selection process by the Counsel of Past Presidents.

It is a time-honored tradition of the Counsel of Past Presidents to create a list of potential nominees, nominate the individual, and vote on the nomination.

The criteria for selection of the Saipan Rotary Club’s Citizen of the Year include good moral character, good standing in the community, demonstration of time-tested devotion to family and the community that he or she serves, and the respect and admiration by and for his or her fellow man.

When applied to the individual, the Citizen of the Year recipient can hold his or her character up to Rotary’s canons of the Four Way Test: “Is it the truth?”, “Is it fair to all concerned?”, “Will it build better friendships and goodwill?”, and “Will it be beneficial to all concerned?”

Pellegrino is a long-time educator and businessman. He has a master of liberal arts from Temple University. He was a public school teacher for six years in the United States and six years in Japan. He also taught at the University of Maryland, Japan Department, for four years. On the business side, Pellegrino has been a businessman for over 46 years.

The 2008 honoree will be added to the list of other honored individuals such as Bishop Thomas A. Camacho, Lt. Gov. Francisco Ada, Susan Palacios Shwartz, Double Past President and Charter member Dave Sablan, Jose C. Tenorio, and Manuel Villagomez, to name a few.
