Mountain biking clinic set this Saturday
The Northern Mariana Islands Triathlon Federation is sponsoring a mountain biking clinic this Saturday, July 19, at the field next to the Kan Pacific Swimming Pool in Marpi.
There will be four instructional topics: (1) Ascending (biking uphill), (2) Descending and Turning (biking downhill), (3) Avoiding obstacles (bunny hops, wheelies, track stands), and (4) Equipment, Maintenance, and Repair.
Each participant will spend one-half hour covering each topic, for a total of two hours of instruction.
Participants will be divided into four groups according to experience: (1) those who have never rode a mountain bike, (2) those who have been riding very casually but without instruction, (3) those who ride regularly but without instruction, and (4) road bikers with lots of experience in road biking, but want to improve their mountain biking skills. Each group will move from one site to another together.
Each topic will begin with a lecture and demonstration by the instructor. Then, the participants will saddle up on their own bikes—yes, you must bring your bike—and will practice the skills shown. We have a nice hill at the ball field for ascending and descending and a lot of thick grass to cushion falls.
The fee is $10/person, but NMITF members may attend for only $5. Registration begins at 8:30am and cuts off at 9am. Classes are 9am, 9:30am, 10am, and 10:30am. It officially ends at 11am.
You must be 18 to attend, pay the fee, and sign a waiver. Helmets are, of course, mandatory. Bring your bike.
We will have tents, cold water, and instructors. At present, there are four instructors: Russ Quinn, Ely Torgenson, Tyce Mister, and Nate Hawley.
Keep in mind that this is for bikers of all levels, so if you are experienced, please come to practice your skills, and if you are not, please do not be intimidated. Also, spread the word to your friends. This is a great opportunity to introduce others to mountain biking.
If you have any questions, contact Russ Quinn at 287-0318.
Mark the date on your calendar—next Saturday morning at 8:30am. (NMITF)
