Jesus Iguel topped this week’s sports headlines after representing the CNMI in the 12th IAAF World Junior Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland.

The 19-year-old Kagman High School student notched a personal best when he ran the 100m in 11.71 last Wednesday. His time broke the 11.82 he registered during the recent 2008 Oceania Grand Prix held here on Saipan.

Iguel previously ran the 100m in 11.5 during the McDonald’s All-Schools Meet last month, but that was using a hand timer.

In other sports news this past week, the gallant CNMI team that saw action in the 2008 East Asian Football Federation Under-14 Youth Football Festival in Guam succumbed to its fourth straight loss when they bowed to Chinese-Taipei, 0-7, Tuesday at the LeoPalace Resort.

The 14-under team, making only its second off-island appearance, previously lost to Macau, China, and North Korea.

The championship of the Inaugural FMI Inter-Color Basketball League’s open division, meanwhile, got going last Thursday with Freddie Pelisamen and powerhouse Ol’Aces routing pennant champions Advance X-Terminators, 129-93, at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

Tsunami Swimming Center Saipan, for its part, concluded its latest American Red Cross Water Safety Course last Saturday at Fiesta Resort and Spa Saipan with 63 students receiving their certificate of completions.

Club president Stan Good said of the 63 who graduated, 22 were from Level I, 16 from Level 2, 19 from Level 3, and four in Level 6. Level 1 is for beginners, while Level 6 is for advance swimmers.

Simon Manacop, Raymond Zapanta, and Francisco “Kitz” Barja also competed in the 20th Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships held this past week in Hong Kong.

Tanapag Falcons’ Mike Pangelinan also hit the 2008 Budweiser Saipan Major League’s third outside-the-park homerun after rounding the bases against Kabur Monday.

Last but not the least, Department of Community and Cultural Affairs center/forward Taj Van Buren is currently leading the scoring race in the 2008 PTI Inter-Government Business Basketball League with 122 total points in four games, good for an average of 30.5 per outing.
