Fire investigators yesterday were still looking into the cause of Wednesday’s fire that razed the MGM garment factory in Chalan Piao.

“The cause of the fire is still under investigation,” according to Department of Public Safety spokesperson Lei Ogumoro. “At this time, the cause of the fire is undetermined.”

She said investigators were still checking the fire scene and interviewing witnesses.

Investigators were seen at MGM from morning until afternoon.

As of 4pm yesterday, Ogumoro said investigators were still at the scene.

The blaze, which reportedly started shortly before 5am and was extinguished at 3:30pm that day, resulted in the evacuation of over 200 workers.

Initial investigation showed that the fire started at the production line near the southern end of the single story tin-roofed factory. No one was hurt as the factory was closed at the time. The workers were then sleeping in their barracks, which is located in a separate three-story concrete building.

The barracks is in the same MGM compound along Tun Tomas P. Sablan Road corner Lillok Plaza. Behind the barracks was the factory that went up in flames.
