The House of Representatives has asked the Fitial administration to set aside $6.6 million in federal funds for two major road construction projects.

A House resolution adopted yesterday calls on Gov. Benigno R. Fitial and Public Works Secretary Diego Songsong to ensure funding for the design and construction of roads and drainage from Capital Hill to Mt. Tapochau, and from Chalan Galaide to Navy Hill.

According to the lawmakers, DPW and the Saipan Mayor’s Office have already spent too much money maintaining the two coral roads.

The House members noted that, by paving the roads and fixing the drainage systems, the government will save money and provide better access to Mt. Tapochao, which is a popular tourist spot. The public will also benefit once the government fixes Chalan Galaide. Capital Hill residents use the road as a short cut to Navy Hill.

The House members suggested that federal highway funds be reserved for the projects in these installments: $650,000 in fiscal year 2009, $2.975 million in FY2010, and another $2.975 million in FY2011.
