Forty-four applicants for police cadets and 24 applicants for fire cadets have passed the assessment and agility tests conducted by the Department of Public Safety.

DPS commissioner Claudio K. Norita on Tuesday said a total of 44 applicants who passed the assessment and agility tests for police cadets were scheduled for interview yesterday.

Norita said 24 other applicants for fire cadets would be interviewed next week.

He said the 68 were among the over 300 people who applied for the slots of 20 police officers and 16 firefighters.

Although applicants could get high scores during interview, Norita said the actual hiring will also depend on the background check.

“If everything goes as planned now, hopefully we want to start the academy on Aug. 4, 2008,” said Norita, adding that the schedule is actually two months delayed than originally planned.

Once the interview is completed, the successful applicants should pass the background or criminal records check. The top 36 applicants will then be picked and hired to become police and firefighter cadets.

DPS is hiring police officers and firefighters due to the scheduled July 14 deployment of 32 police officers and firefighters to the Middle East. Many positions at DPS are also vacant because of retirement and resignation of officers and firefighters.
