Upward Bound hosts workshop
Fifteen students participated in a recent Upward Bound workshop on note taking, time management and cultivating effective study habits.
The workshop gave the students knowledge about the importance of note taking, allowing one to review materials for exams, keeping one’s attention, and eliminating the need to recopy notes later on.
The workshop also provided tips on how to take notes, edit notes, and review notes.
On study skills, workshop participants were taught how to prepare for tests using test prep cards. Study tools were also taught such as planning ahead of time.
The Upward Bound workshop happens once every two weeks, but sometimes happens once a week, depending on the availability of guest speakers.
The Upward Bound program started since 1983. It is a federally funded program sponsored by the United States Department of Education. It is designed to help high school kids prepare for college.
“It went well and was successful. Most of the participants showed up and attended,” said Zenaida Javier, co-facilitator of the workshop.
Javier is also the Academic Advisement Coordinator for Upward Bound. Javier and Jane Tudela were the presenters at the workshop.
In this program, students mentor fellow students, receive tutoring with their high school studies, participate in a six-week summer enrichment program or a math/science summer program, take part in recreational activities, partake in career exploration activities, attend seminars, and go on field trips.
