The Japanese male tourist who was found motionless on top of a beach mat that was floating at a beachside in San Antonio died not from drowning but from a heart attack.

Department of Public Safety spokesperson Lei Ogumoro said yesterday that police learned after further investigation that Toshitsugi Tanoue died of a cardiopulmonary arrest.

Ogumoro did not release more details.

It was not clear whether an autopsy was conducted to determine Tanoue’s cause of death.

The 37-year-old tourist was found motionless on top of a beach mat that was floating at the beach near the Pacific Islands Club Wednesday morning. He was transported to the Commonwealth Health Center and was pronounced dead at 2pm Thursday by Dr. Leo Arcilla.

Police preliminary investigation showed that two Japanese persons swimming at the beach near PIC noticed the victim floating on the water on top of his beach mat.

The victim, who was later identified as Tanoue, was face down and was not moving.

The witnesses sought the help of a nearby lifeguard after noticing that the victim had white foam coming out of his mouth and nose.

The lifeguard brought Tanoue to the shore where he then administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the victim.

Tanoue was then brought to CHC’s Intensive Care Unit where he was later pronounced dead.
