A Japanese male tourist who was found motionless on top of a beach mat that was floating beachside near the Pacific Islands Club in San Antonio Wednesday morning died at the hospital yesterday.
Toshitsugi Tanoue, 37, was pronounced dead at 2am by Dr. Leo Arcilla at the Commonwealth Health Center, according to the Department of Public Safety.
“For now, police have classified the incident as a dead person case. This case is still under investigation,” DPS spokesperson Lei Ogumoro said.
DPS initially received a report of a possible drowning incident at PIC.
Ogumoro said the police’s preliminary investigation showed that two Japanese persons swimming at the beach near PIC first noticed the victim floating in the water on top of his beach mat. The victim was facing down and was motionless.
The witnesses then sought the help of a nearby lifeguard after noticing that the victim had white foam coming out of his mouth and nose.
The victim, later identified as Tanoue, was brought to shore where the lifeguard administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation on him.
Police and medics responded to the area and immediately brought Tanoue to CHC’s Intensive Care Unit, where he was placed on life support. The following day, the doctor pronounced him dead.
Ogumoro said police are still looking into the cause of death.
