Support the marine monument!
I am 28 years old and I was born on Saipan. Currently I live with my husband, a private serving in the U.S. Army, and our two children in Avondale, Arizona. We plan on returning to Saipan when his service to our country is complete.
I’ve been following the story of the Mariana Trench Monument in the newspapers and on the blogs. Has there ever been a better opportunity presented to the people of the CNMI?
Why is the governor saying that the monument “will strip fishing rights and other powers” away from the Commonwealth’s inhabitants?
The governor is one of the few wealthy locals that can afford to send his kids to the states for school or work. The rest of us are going to have to scrape out a living on Saipan. What are we going to do? What economic opportunities are our leaders creating?
The Monument would create jobs and it would bring research dollars to the college. Jobs and education. How can any politician reasonably be against this proposal?
If somebody has another plan for that part of our island chain, I’d love to see it. Undersea mining is a pipe dream, the commercial fishing venture on Rota is already in default and will probably be out of business before the last garment factory closes, there can be no development on the three small uninhabited islands because they are protected by our Constitution, and hardly anybody goes up that far except for illegal foreign fishing vessels.
Support the marine monument.
