Two men rescue tourist from near drowning in Managaha
A man and a lifeguard rescued a 61-year-old tourist from nearly drowning on the waters surrounding Managaha Island Thursday at noon.
Hiroshi Yoshijima, a Japanese male, was treated at the Commonwealth Health Center and placed under observation for having fluid in the lungs, according to the Department of Public Safety.
DPS spokesperson Lei Ogumoro said two minutes after they received a report about the incident on Thursday at 12:06pm, a boat carrying Yoshijima arrived at the Smiling Cove Marina.
Ogumoro said preliminary investigation showed that Yoshijima and two family members were swimming at the northern end of Managaha Island.
While swimming, one of the family members noticed the victim floating face down on the surface of the water and was motionless.
The relative started yelling for help, prompting a Japanese man to jump into the water and pull the victim out of the water and onto the shore.
Yoshijima was observed breathing heavily. An on-duty lifeguard, Leo Wania, was at the southern end of the island when he was immediately notified.
Wania assisted Yoshijima by placing him in the recovery position. A Tasi Tour boat later arrived and transported the victim to Smiling Cove Marina, where medics brought him to CHC.
